Island student gets “on the ground” experience thanks to Jersey-based mining firms

Local Geoscience student, Christopher Le Cornu, never thought he’d be able to find work experience opportunities in geology in Jersey, but placements provided by two Jersey-headquartered mining firms have provided him with invaluable work experience in exploration and mining geology in both Armenia and Australia.

Christopher, in his 4th Year of his MSCi at Durham University, was successful in applying for a scholarship scheme being offered by Jersey-based Consolidated Minerals, which provided financial help for his degree as well as 5 weeks paid work experience in Western Australia. He followed this with 2 weeks of work experience in Armenia with gold mining and mineral exploration company, Lydian International.

Christopher explains; “When I first decided to study for a career as a geologist, I thought Jersey was likely to be the last place where I would be able to find work experience. It turned out I was wrong!

Thanks to the work experience offered by Consolidated Minerals and Lydian International, I will return to my final year at Durham with a much greater understanding of the practice behind the theory and a range of new skills and experiences to put on my CV, which will be an invaluable asset when applying for work after graduation next summer”.
