Whether it’s moving for family or work, it’s essential that both sides are suited to the arrangement. For Alex Knowelden of BHP, his family-led move from Guernsey to Jersey was exactly that. Here he explains why the island ended up being the perfect base for his business and lifestyle:
“From a personal perspective my wife is originally from Jersey so I’ve had a lot of exposure to the island over the past four years or so. When BHP decided to set up a physical presence in the island, it was a natural move for us as a young family and we’ve really enjoyed being here since 2017.”
BHP is a Channel Islands company that has been delivering Chartered Building Surveying, Project Management, Cost Consultancy, and Architectural services for thirty years. These services are normally provided by individual firms, but Alex has found that this multi-disciplinary approach is well suited not only for the more complex commercial and residential buildings, but across all building types, and across both islands:
“Having been based in Guernsey for many years initially, it’s clear that our multi-disciplinary approach is very appealing pan-Channel Island, on both the residential and commercial property sides, for clients who would otherwise procure their services through a number of different firms.
“We see BHP thriving under the high demand for property and construction services in Jersey. The Island has experienced a buoyant property market over the past few years, principally supported by confidence in the economy and low interest rates, and having a physical presence in Jersey means we are better placed to serve this economic activity.
“In terms of moving here with my family, there really isn't a better way to describe the process than 'seamless', and we could not have done it without the help of Locate Jersey. Moving house, never mind island, can be a stressful and emotional period for anyone, particularly as we had a baby on the way. However, the support we got was invaluable, in particular guiding BHP through the various steps needed to establish our operation.
“Even after we had moved, the invite to their 'after-care' events, with thoughtful consideration of who we might like to be introduced to on both personal and professional levels, made us feel incredibly well looked after.”
Though it may be geographically close to Guernsey, it’s clear that the short hop over the Channel has been refreshing for Alex and his family:
“Jersey is absolutely lovely, and the lifestyle here is perfect for a family like ours with a young baby. I love the landscape, especially when you are in St. Ouen and there are rolling fields coupled with a fun filled shore line. I very much appreciate fine food too and we never get bored of trying the different restaurants and cafes across Jersey.
“Looking to the future for BHP - we plan to build a strong local team here over the coming years and have been impressed with the calibre of professionals here so far, having already employed a number of valuable staff.”
I think it’s fair to say that we’re excited about the growth opportunities Jersey can offer us, and confident in the people who work with us.
I’m looking forward to seeing BHP develop in this incredibly supportive, innovative environment.”
