Setting up a large business in a new environment takes time, and cannot be rushed, but Chris Jenkins, MD of Tora, discovered that with the right support it can be a relatively easy and very worthwhile transition:
“Tora provides specialist technology for fund managers who need tools to help them with their investment and trading processes. Our focus has historically been on hedge funds, but we also support many other asset managers who need a technology solution, for anything from order management, trading and analytics through to risk management and compliance.”
Having initially met the Locate Jersey team at an industry event in Hong Kong, Chris was impressed with what he was told about Jersey and decided to explore it a bit more:
“We’re a global company, with offices already in Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Romania and San Francisco, and a few years ago we made a strategic decision to expand our reach into the European market. In fact, at the outset, Jersey was not really on our radar and we were looking at more ‘traditional’ options such as London. However, Jersey quickly went from an interesting alternative to a credible option and in 2015 I made the initial move over from Hong Kong to begin setting up our Jersey office as our new European headquarters.”
“In an environment you’re not familiar with, establishing a new company and office is always going to take time, and the due diligence and audit work we’ve gone through has been time-consuming. However, the support we’ve received has been very helpful, particularly from the population office and Locate Jersey.
We were aware of Jersey’s strengths as a fund management centre, and the growth the island is seeing in that area was a key factor in our decision to move here. The commitment Jersey has to developing its digital infrastructure and capabilities was also a big draw.”
As Chris was moving to Jersey with family, the lifestyle, particularly compared with the alternative of London, was also a major deciding factor for him:

“In terms of future growth for Tora, the evolving regulatory environment gives us opportunities to support European managers with some complex issues. We’re excited about what we can build from Jersey, supporting managers here and reaching out into fund management hubs in Europe more widely, such as London, Paris and Geneva.”
