The emergence of a number of new markets, along with changes made to legislation regulating the gaming sector, enabled Jersey to enter this huge growth industry and, foreseeing this development, gaming consultant Phil Shaw seized the opportunity to move his business to the Island.
He explains: “Think Gaming is an independent consultancy, providing professional services to online gaming companies worldwide. We support business development strategies; marketing activities; licensing within various jurisdictions and advise on due diligence aspects of mergers and acquisitions within this complex sector. My wife and I were previously based in North West England, but we decided that we were ready for a lifestyle change and where we were physically based made little difference to the business.
“We have clients in locations around the world, including Malta, Gibraltar and Alderney. But we didn’t feel drawn to these places in the same way that we were to Jersey.
“The global online gaming sector is worth billions and so it is an incredibly exciting and fast-moving market to be operating within. When we contacted the team at Locate Jersey to ask for their advice and support, we were delighted to find that they are forward thinking and shared our enthusiasm and excitement about the opportunities that this rapidly expanding market presents to the Island going forward.
“When we were applying for our business licence, the Locate Jersey team guided us on what was required of our business plan, before we submitted it to the Jersey authorities. We were thrilled with how quickly our licence was granted and this was doubtless down to the fact that Locate Jersey helped to steer our efforts very efficiently.
“Once established, our business began to expand quickly and we were thrilled to find that Locate Jersey’s support is ongoing. Following their guidance, we compiled an updated business plan to send to the regulator, which proposed the acquisition of a likeminded, London-based business, with the mobile gaming expertise we were looking to develop. Our submission to the authorities was given the green light very quickly and we were able to bring these exciting new operations to the Island within a matter of weeks.
“We have employed the expertise of several local consultants and also work closely with Digital Jersey, the Island’s industry body which promotes businesses operating and pioneering within the sectors of technology and innovation. Together we are aiming to develop digital skillsets on the Island; to begin recruiting locally and also to nurture a pipeline of talent, in order to grow the Island’s digital skills base.
“In terms of our change of lifestyle, we couldn’t be happier! We moved to Jersey with our two dogs, Enzo and Buster and enjoy the endless opportunities for beautiful walks, exploring different areas around the Island. We are also big foodies and we love the huge collection of excellent restaurants that the Island has to offer – the choice is amazingly broad, especially for a small Island and the quality of the food is always superb.”
