Jersey attracts significant interest at major Anglo-Chinese conference

‚ÄčA broad range of Jersey’s business expertise was showcased to a sellout audience of over 500 key British and Chinese professionals at the China British Business Council’s (CBBC) China Business Conference 2014 this week.
Locate Jersey sponsored the lunch reception at the conference, which took place on Tuesday 14th January at the QEII Conference Centre in London, and led a strong delegation which included representatives from Jersey Finance, Jersey Post, First Names Group, Quilter, Indigo Lighthouse and Professional Fulfillment Services.

A keynote speech from Lord Sassoon, Chairman of CBBC, included a specific welcome to Assistant Minister for Economic Development Deputy James Baker and highlighted Jersey Dairy’s selling of fresh milk into Asia as a prime example of perseverance and enterprise. A total of 34 expert speakers took to the stage at the conference, sharing insights on topics including China’s transformation, current opportunities for Britain and the growth of China’s outward investment. Over 20 reporters from leading national and international media outlets covered the conference.

As well as hosting the Locate Jersey-sponsored lunch, during the conference Deputy Baker also met with a number of delegates and government officials, including HE Ambassador Liu Xiaoming of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, the Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP, and Lord James Sassoon Kt.

Speaking after the conference, Deputy James Baker said: 
“Bilateral trade between Britain and China last year reached $70 billion for the first time, an 11% increase on the previous year. Given Jersey’s strong links with the UK, it is clear that there are significant opportunities for Jersey businesses in China. It is very competitive and a complex market, , so it was extremely positive that not only was there a great deal of interest in talking to Jersey attendees at the event, but that Jersey Dairy’s venture into Asia was highlighted as an example of innovative business.

Right across its finance, tourism, retail, digital and e-commerce sectors, Jersey has a great deal to offer, and feedback from this conference confirmed our belief that we have earned a good reputation and are well placed to act as a gateway to Europe for the raft of Chinese firms seeking to expand globally.”

Locate Jersey’s attendance at the conference formed part of its Chinese market entry strategy and built on a programme of recent China-focused activity including participation in events held in conjunction with CBBC and InvestHK in Hong Kong and Shenzhen last year.
