Even if your business move is just a hop from one Channel Island to the next, Peter Falla, Managing Director of architectural design firm PF+A, believes you really need to immerse yourself in Jersey-life to get the best out of it – for both yourself and the business:
“We had spent 25 years with PF+A in Guernsey, while building our client base all around the Channel Islands, and decided we really needed a presence in Jersey too. Given that all my family are grown up, it was an easy decision for me to move over with my wife, and it was a fantastic decision.
There are some quite significant cultural differences between Guernsey and Jersey, so being here physically is really helpful and offers some real practical benefits. As well as it being a lot easier in terms of visibility to build business, for instance, I find it really refreshing that it is actually very easy to speak to a States Member or the Planning Department in person.
The process of moving to Jersey has been amazing and the people here have been so supportive, right down to the minute detail. Locate Jersey really took us by the hand and made it clear that PF+A has a place here in the Island. We moved in September 2016 and soon realised that working in town is really key for meeting clients, so we actually bought an office in St Helier. That investment is some indication that we are here to stay.
Recruitment-wise we’re doing well too and building a strong local team. We primarily come from a Chartered Institute of Building background which means that we are able to support clients through the entire building process, and to enhance our service we have employed two local RIBA Chartered Architects. We are now able to be truly design innovative and foster a vibrant design culture within our firm offering clients a world class service.
There is a very open feeling to the approach to architecture in Jersey, and there’s not a lot of uniformity around. We see this as giving us more potential for creative freedom and giving us, and Jersey, a platform for some quite innovative designs. It’s a good time for us to be ramping up in Jersey – the market is buoyant and we see some huge opportunities here.
From a lifestyle perspective, I have been really impressed with what Jersey can offer. My wife and I live in a lovely house near the coast, and I am very much enjoying immersing myself in the local food and sports scenes. I can often be found at one of the local eateries, or down at the rugby club watching the Jersey Reds."
